Plugin to make learning journey a bit easier
Have You Ever Learned English with ChatGPT, Only to Forget Almost Everything Later?
Have you ever spent hours learning English with ChatGPT, exploring new vocabulary, practicing conversations, or asking it to explain grammar?
But when you come back the next day, everything feels scattered.
You have learned a lot, but your knowledge is spread across different conversations. You don't always remember what you studied, which vocabulary you encountered, or what you should review next.
And let's be honest: keeping a learning journal sounds like a great idea, but writing down everything after every lesson can become exhausting. Eventually, you stop doing it.
I had exactly the same problem.
I wanted to use AI to improve my English, but I also wanted a way to keep everything organized, track what I had learned, and easily revisit previous lessons.
I didn't want another complicated learning application. I wanted something simple that could fit naturally into the way I already use ChatGPT.
That's why I built 4Strand English.
The Idea: Make Learning Easier to Organize
I started thinking about how to make my English learning process more structured without adding too much work.
One idea was to turn learning notes into a personal journal.
Instead of manually organizing everything in separate documents, I wanted to interact with ChatGPT, record what I had learned, and keep those records somewhere I could access later.
So I combined three familiar tools:
- ChatGPT: Where I interact with AI and my learning materials.
- Google Sheets: Where my learning records are stored and organized by lesson.
- Markdown: How my notes and lesson summaries are presented in a clean, readable format.
The result is a simple learning workflow where I can document and revisit my English lessons without constantly switching between different tools.
A Learning Method Behind the Idea: The Four Strands
While exploring how to improve my English learning, I came across an interesting framework by Paul Nation, an applied linguist who introduced the Four Strands approach to language learning.
His idea is that an effective language learning program should balance four types of activities, with approximately 25% of learning time dedicated to each.
1. Meaning-focused Input — Learn by Listening and Reading
Expose yourself to English through podcasts, videos, conversations, articles, and books. Focus on understanding what you hear and read.
2. Meaning-focused Output — Learn by Speaking and Writing
Use English to express your thoughts. Practice conversations, write about your experiences, and communicate your ideas.
3. Language-focused Learning — Understand the Language
Study vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, expressions, and sentence structures to build a stronger foundation.
4. Fluency Development — Practice What You Already Know
Revisit familiar materials, repeat conversations, and practice using known vocabulary until you can communicate more naturally and confidently.
What I found interesting was that learning English shouldn't be just about memorizing vocabulary or studying grammar.
You need a balance between understanding, communicating, studying, and practicing.
This framework became the learning philosophy behind 4Strand English.
How Does 4Strand English Work?
I wanted the experience to be as simple as possible.
You don't need to open another complicated dashboard or manually search through old conversations.
Just mention @4Strand English inside ChatGPT to interact with your learning records.

The plugin connects to your Google Sheets and retrieves your previously recorded learning data, organized by lesson.

Your learning notes are then presented in a structured Markdown format, making it easier to revisit important vocabulary, expressions, lesson summaries, and key takeaways.

What You Can Do
- Access Your Learning Records: Retrieve your personal English learning data from Google Sheets directly through ChatGPT.
- Review by Lesson: Find and revisit specific lessons instead of searching through scattered conversations.
- Readable Learning Journal: View your notes and summaries in a clean Markdown interface.
- Keep Your Knowledge Organized: Maintain a structured history of what you have learned.
- AI-Powered Interaction: Use ChatGPT as the interface for interacting with your learning materials.
Your Learning Workflow
I wanted to create a simple cycle that makes learning easier to maintain over time.
01. Learn
Practice English through listening, reading, speaking, writing, and other learning activities.
02. Journal
Record important vocabulary, expressions, grammar points, mistakes, and takeaways from your learning session.
03. Store
Keep your learning records organized in Google Sheets, with each lesson stored for future reference.
04. Review
Whenever you want to revisit previous knowledge, mention @4Strand English in ChatGPT and retrieve your learning records.
05. Keep Growing
Build on what you have already learned instead of starting from zero every time.
Built for My Own Learning, Shared with You
I originally built 4Strand English to solve a problem in my own learning journey.
I wanted to make learning English with AI more organized, easier to maintain, and less dependent on my memory or willingness to write notes manually.
If you have ever experienced the same frustration, I hope this little tool can make your learning journey a bit easier too.
Learn something new. Keep track of it. Come back to it. And keep moving forward.
